Two Sequim brothers were arrested on suspicion of malicious mischief, resisting arrest and possessing alcohol June 28 when a Sequim Police officer chased them down behind Safeway on Washington Street.

A certification for probable cause filed with Clallam County Superior Court gives the following narrative:

At 2:41 a.m. on June 28 a

Sequim Police officer responded to a report of malicious mischief in progress at Safeway. A passerby had reported two juveniles were writing graffiti on the front of Safeway. When the officer arrived, the two boys, aged 15 and 17, ran into some bushes but were unable to escape because of a large fence, police said.

Police said the boys then turned and began running toward the police officer, who yelled for them to stop. The boys continued to run but were caught after a short pursuit.

The boys had large paint markers and a spray can in their possession and smelled of alcohol, police said.

The Sequim Gazette does not publish the names of juveniles accused of committing a crime.

Sequim Police Officer Maris Turner said the boys are suspected of tagging a wall near Safeway, a sign in front of the Vintage Apartments and the Mugs ‘N’ Jugs Tavern.

Both were booked into the juvenile detention facility and at their July 1 arraignment were charged with malicious mischief in the third degree, resisting arrest and minor in possession of or consuming alcohol, according to court records. The boys pleaded not guilty.

Turner said the boys were not linked to the graffiti on Sequim’s east side, which happened in May.
