Sequim-area voters will only see one primary race this August following the May 15-19 filing period.
Three candidates filed for Clallam County Fire District 3’s commissioner No. 2 seat — incumbent Steven Chinn, who was appointed in July 2016; Sean Ryan, who has run for a fire commissioner seat twice before; and Robert Porrazzo. Look for an introduction to this race in the June 14 edition.
The Aug. 1 primary ballot will determine which two candidates move onto the Nov. 7 general election.
Voters won’t vote on Sequim’s other races until November because they only have one or two people, said Clallam County elections supervisor Rick Wagner.
Two seats are open for the Sequim School Board with Jon Kirshbaum and Brian Kuh running for director Position No. 2, and Brandino Gibson and Nola Judd running for the at-large director Position No. 4.
Kuh, who was appointed to the No. 4 seat earlier this year, vies with Kirshbaum for Michael Howe’s position after he opted not to run.
Howe, spokesman for the Clallam County Public Utility District, told the Peninsula Daily News that he “can make a bigger difference in things with the work I do on the side, with volunteering, focusing on kids and the family.”
Position No. 2 may have gone to the primary, but Dan Nelson withdrew from the race.
The only other contested race is between incumbent Colleen McAleer and business consultant Michael Cobb for Port of Port Angeles District 1 commissioner.
All other seats for the Clallam County Public Hospital District, Sequim City Council, County Park and Recreation District (SARC) and Sunland Water District are unopposed.
Three of four incumbents for the Sequim City Council — Deputy Mayor Ted Miller, Position No. 3; Mayor Dennis Smith, Position No. 4; and city councilor Bob Lake, Position No. 6, who was appointed in January 2016, filed for election.
City councilor Genaveve Starr, who was appointed in January 2013 and elected later that year for Position No. 5, opted not to run because she wants a break from 20-plus years of continual community service, she said. Current Sequim Planning Commissioner Brandon Janisse filed for Starr’s seat.
This will be his third time running for city council. He also applied for an open seat that went to Lake.
Janisse said he continues to run for office because he wants to be a voice for people looking for living wage jobs and affordable housing. He also wants to promote more light industry within the city limits and depend less on grants for future city projects due to their uncertainty for planning purposes.
Both incumbents John Nutter for Clallam County Public Hospital District No. 2 Position No. 1, and John Miles for District No. 3 Position No. 2 filed for office while Annajo “Aj” Hitchcock is running for Clallam County Park and Recreation District 1 commissioner No. 1 Position held by Sherry Nagel, and Frank Pickering who decided to run again for commissioner No. 2.
Gary Fortmann also is running for the Sunland Water District commissioner No. 2 Position, from which John Lewis withdrew his name.
