Attendees of the “Americans Helping Our Disabled Veterans and Their Families” at the Sequim Elks Lodge on July 4 showed off their RED Shirt Friday wear.
Members of the local Ladies of Elks group at Lodge No. 2642. The RED shirts — standing for “Remember Everyone Deployed” — started in the early 2000s and became popularized particularly in Canada, with rallies spreading across the nation.
Lloyd “Doc” Hofmeister started a website (redshirtfridays.org) to promote the idea of people supporting U.S. servicemen and servicewomen through an apolitical organization.
“We wish to let our servicemen and servicewomen know we support their sacrifice and that we will not forget them,” Hofmeister writes on his website.
Karen Lewis of the Sequim Elks Lodge says RED shirts are available for $20 with $3 going to local disabled veterans and families.
