A Sequim motorcyclist died in June after running into a car making a U-turn just west of Carlsborg, according to Brian King, chief criminal deputy for the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office.
Austin Middleton, 28, died at 12:30 p.m. June 12, when his 2008 Yamaha FZ6 motorcycle traveling south on Joslin Road in Sequim struck a car conducting a U-turn in the 100 block of Joslin.
Middleton struck the driver’s side of the car, a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta, and died at the scene, King reported.
Middleton was wearing a helmet, King said, but he sustained significant traumatic injury as a result of the collision.
Inspector Josh Ley of the sheriff’s office said that excessive speed on the road with a 25 mph speed limit caused the collision.
Ley reports that witnesses estimate “the motorcycle to have been traveling at approximately over three times the 25 mph speed limit about 700 feet prior to the crash.”
He said the motorcycle’s skid marks before the crash indicated it was traveling at about 50 mph at that point.
Through his inspection, Ley said he found the car driver used a parking lot to be clear of the roadway to make the turn but he did not discern the motorcycle’s approach speed.
“A time and distance evaluation showed that if the bike had been traveling at the speed limit when and where the car driver first perceived it, there would have been sufficient time to safely complete the lawful U-turn,” he said.
The car driver was not injured and he was not charged with anything criminally, law enforcement report. The car was damaged, Ley said.
