Sequim resident Edward F. Calvin, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene of a four-vehicle collision on Friday, June 10, about four miles east of Sequim on U.S. Highway 101 in Blyn.

The collision occurred at 2:43 p.m., after Calvin, crossed the centerline and hit the westbound van driven by Andrew H. Stockton, 61, of Daly City, Calif., according to the Washington State Patrol report.

Calvin’s pickup rotated into the westbound lane and was struck by a 2011 Peterbilt semi tractor driven by Allen R. Ludlow, 38, of Camas.

The collision with the semi tractor pushed Calvin’s pickup back into the eastbound lane, where it was hit by a Honda four-door driven by Susan M. Turpen, 53, of Bainbridge Island.

Calvin’s pickup caught fire and came to rest in the eastbound ditch, the State Patrol said. Turpen’s car came to rest against the pickup and also caught fire. Stockton’s van and the semi-truck ended up in the westbound ditch.

Ludlow and Turpen were not hurt, the State Patrol said, but Stockton was taken to Olympic Medical Center with injuries.

Also not injured were Stockton’s passenger, Sarah E. Stockton, 53, of Daly City, and Turpen’s passenger, Rosemarie I. Torres, 51, of Suquamish.

The highway was fully or partially blocked for 4.5 hours following the crash at milepost 271 near the Longhouse Market & Deli, troopers said.

As of Tuesday, June 14, the collision was still under investigation, with no conclusions as to why Calvin’s pickup crossed the centerline, said Trooper Russ Winger, State Patrol public information officer.

“It will be some time before we’ll know anything,” he said. “We’re waiting for the toxicology and other routine information to help us rule out possible causes.”
