A number of efforts to refurbish and replace key components of school infrastructure continue to see progress as part of the Sequim School District’s capital projects this spring.

Chris Marfori, project manager with Wenaha Group — the lead company overseeing projects in the district — gave board directors an overview of those projects at the board’s May 9 meeting.

Six projects listed in the Tier 1 (April 2022-May 2023) schedule are funded by the Capital Projects Levy voters passed in February 2021, with $2,785,000 dedicated to adding fire alarm in portables at Helen Haller Elementary School, a roof recoat at Sequim Middle School, a heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC) system replacement at Sequim High School, gymnasium roof recoat at Olympic Peninsula Academy, district-wide voice systems replacement and fiber optic infrastructure upgrades.

An additional $1,215,000 in general capital project funds and federal grants is earmarked for the multipurpose boardroom, nicknamed The Loft, along with the adjacent, ADA-accessible elevator and HVAC upgrades/replacements at Sequim High and Olympic Peninsula Academy’s gymnasium structure.

Design of The Loft is moving forward, Marfori said, with permitting from the city coming next month.

Project organizers are finalizing the fiber optic infrastructure improvements that will begin as soon as school lets out, he said.

Directors cancel May 23 meeting

Sequim’s board of directors agreed unanimously to cancel their May 23 meeting. Trayce Norman, executive assistant to the superintendent who runs the board’s meetings, is unable to attend the next regularly scheduled meeting and the district doesn’t have a backup staffer trained sufficiently to cover her role, interim superintendent Joan Zook said on May 9.

The board’s next regular meeting is June 6.
