The young high school student with a world of talent hopes to travel the globe when she finishes high school.

She may have a few awards to pick up along the way.

Stephanie Dunbar, a junior at Sequim High School, became the first Sequim choir student to place at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest when she took third overall in the solo alto division at 2010 event in April.

Dunbar, 17, has been in choir for five years under the direction of instructor Stephanie Clark. She competed at last year’s state event, also in the alto division.

Dunbar competed against 21 other altos in the 2010 event. She sang “Nur Wer Die Sehnsucht Kennt” (None But The Lonely Heart) by Tchaikovsky, and “Where’er You Walk” by Handel, accompanied by Gary McRoberts.

Dunbar was a member of the All State Treble Choir in February in Yakima. She will be participating in the Heritage Festival in Anaheim, Calif., later this month with the high school choir.

She recently was nominated and plans to audition for the American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2011.

She studies opera with Sydney Keegan of Port Hadlock and with Anneliese von Goerken, Adelphi University’s opera professor.

In addition to singing, Dunbar is studying piano with Linda Dowdell and plays piano in the high school jazz band.

She performs the part of Rapunzel in Sequim High School’s operetta “Into The Woods,” playing May 13-15.

Dunbar says she enjoys anything having to do with art, whether it is vocal, visual, instrumental or dramatic. She said she’s intrigued with world culture and plans to attend a university majoring in international studies and vocal performance.
