While the competition is a few weeks in the past, three Sequim students fared pretty well looking into the future.
Lily Engeset, 14, Deven Biehler, 13, and Melanie Byrne, 12, from Olympic Peninsula Academy, placed fourth overall in the Washington State National Engineers Week Regional Future City Competition on Jan. 23 at the DigiPen Institute of Technology.
They followed the theme “Waste Not, Want Not” to design their city F’an’rong — Chinese for prosperity — to use waste management systems with various issues such as recycling and energy efficiency in mind.
Sequim’s students presented a model, speech, essay and computer simulation of their city.
Learning coach Lilli Hardesty said while the Sequim team placed fourth overall, they placed first in the engineering and land survey knowledge category above 24 teams.
Sandpoint Middle School from Idaho took first followed by Three Rivers Homelink from Richland in second, and Pacific Middle School from Des Moines. First-place winners compete in the National Finals on Feb. 13-17 in Washington, D.C.
