caps season with finals
The Peninsula College Indoor Soccer League finished its 2008 season with a tournament last week. Champions include the Pirate Mud Dogs (women’s division), the Freight Train of Pain (black division) and Team Merkin (gold division).
In all, the league featured 23 teams and more than 200 participants.
Robin Hill run
set for April 12
The Robin Hill Run, a three-mile/10-kilometer race beginning and ending at Robin Hill Park in Agnew, is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start on April 12.
It’s the second race of three in the 2008 Athlete’s Choice Race Series. Cost is $20, or $25 for day-of-race registration. Youths 5 years and younger can race for $5.

Fly-fishing Expo
The fifth-annual Olympic Peninsula Fly-fishing Expo is slated for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., Port Townsend.
Expo presenters include Phil Rowley, Doug Rose and Skip Morris. They, along with other fly fishermen and guides, host slide shows and presentations on fly-tying, casting, fly-fishing photography and fishing destinations – with an emphasis on peninsula waters. Vendors will offer tackle, books, boats, artwork and more.
Cost is $9 per adult or $2 for youths 12 years old and younger; parking is free.

Local youths shine
at HotSpot skills
competition
Caitlin Stofferahn of Sequim scored 57 points and took second in the girls’ 9-10 division at the state HotSpot basketball skills competition March 9 in Lakewood.
Janson Pederson of Port Angeles took first in the boys’ 9-10 division (he was the 7-8 division champ in 2007). Jake Sparks (boys 7-8) and Austin Polly (boys 11-12), both of Port Angeles, competed but did not place.
Anglers to meet,
discuss season opener
Puget Sound Anglers, North Olympic Peninsula Chapter, is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim.
With halibut fishing season opening April 10 in fishing Area 6 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca), the group plans to talk about how to fish for halibut in this area. Members provide demonstrations of equipment, advice on fishing areas and the club provides a free information booklet on halibut fishing.

horse ‘play day’
The Jefferson County Silver Spurs 4-H Horse Club hosts the "Hairy Horse Play Day" beginning at noon, Saturday, March 22, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend.
Sign-up starts at 11 a.m. the day of event. The entry fee is $25 for the day.
Classes include barrel racing, flag barrels, pole bending, box game, egg-on-a-spoon and more. There also are several classes that don’t require a horse, including the boot race, three-legged race and egg toss. All mounted classes require a helmet and riding boots. Rhody Run in P.T.
slated for May 18
The 30th running of the Rhody Run 12k road race in Port Townsend is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start May 18 at Fort Worden State Park.
Preregistration is done online (rhodyrun.com) or through the mail only. Cost is $25 plus a $2.63 transaction fee for those 15 years old and older on the date of the race; $10 and a $1.65 transaction fee for those younger than 15.
Late registration begins May 8 up to 30 minutes before the race; cost is $40 for participants 15 and older, $20 for those younger than 15.
Medallions are awarded to the first three places in each of 16 age divisions for both men and women.

Church group to recycle
used soccer jerseys
The Sequim Community Church high school youth group is traveling to the Door of Faith Orphanage (www.dofo.org) during spring break, March 31-April 4, to work on various building projects. The members hope to take lots of gently used soccer jerseys from the Sequim community to be reused by the children who live at the home.
