Students earn Sequim Arts awards

P.C. student earns honors
Sarah Lindquist, former staff photographer at the student newspaper The Buccaneer of Peninsula College, was a finalist in two categories at The Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 10 Mark of Excellence contest. Results were announced last week.
Lindquist was among three finalists in both Feature Photography-Small division — for “Flying Free at PC” — and the “Flying Free at PC” division.
The contest honors the best of collegiate journalism from a calendar year.
Last year, Lindquist received a First Place for her Editorial Cartooning in the small school division (under 5,000 students) as a staff member on The Buccaneer.
Pair excels at SPU
Allison Cutting and David Lopes of Sequim recently were named to Seattle Pacific University 2014 Winter Quarter Dean’s List. Students on the Dean’s List have completed at least 12 credits and attained a 3.50 or higher grade-point average.
Hall earns premier scholarship
Kyla Hall, a 2010 Sequim High School graduate, is among the few students selected as a 2014 R. Gene Richter Scholar, an award annually presented to top supply chain management students from across the United States.
Hall is a student in the Western Washington University Honors College with a cumulative 3.61 grade-point average. Hall will graduate in December 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing and supply chain management, and a B.A. in business and sustainability. She will be Washington’s first graduate with a B.A. in business and sustainability.
Hall has completed five internships, totaling over 1,500 hours. As a supply chain analyst intern for Boeing, Hall developed a training tool for senior management to illustrate how materials flow from suppliers to mechanics and collaborated to generate a project management toolkit for benchmarking activities, among other responsibilities.
She is a College of Business and Economics Distinguished Scholar and member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society.
Hall chose a career path that would allow her to pursue her passion for business while making a positive societal impact,” she said. “As a supply chain management professional, I have an opportunity to make a difference on an entire product lifecycle. With the tools I’m learning at WWU, I am excited to shift towards building healthier supply chains for all stakeholders, including the environment and its people,” Hall said.
As an award recipient, Hall will be honored at ISM2014 in Las Vegas from May 5-7.
Now in its 11th year, the R. Gene Richter Scholarship carries a monetary award of up to $5,000 in tuition assistance.
Starring at Sunrise Rotary
Josiah Carter was named Sequim Sunrise Rotary’s April Middle School Student of the Month. He is the son of Ron and Lori Carter. Carter said his favorite subject is robotics. He enjoys playing football and currently has a 4.0 grade-point average. Carter said he plans to attend college upon high school graduation.
The write stuff
Sequim Elks Lodge #2642 recently hosted the 2013-2014 Elks Americanism Essay contest winners and their families as guests at a recent social night dinner.
Sequim Middle School and Helen Haller students are winners in the Elks Grand Lodge 2013-2014 Americanism Essay Contest. Students competed on two levels — fifth- and sixth-grade and seventh-eighth-grade. The theme of the essay was “What Does Veterans Day Mean to Me.” Mattson presented each winner with an award certificate and a monetary award of $30-$25 or $20 for first, second, and third place respectively.

Winning essays were submitted for district level competition and district winners are forwarded to the state level for judging.
