A suspicious box presumed to be dangerous found inside the Sequim Post Office, 240 S. Sunnyside Ave., Sunday morning was deemed a hoax by local law enforcement.

Detective Sgt. Sean Madison of the Sequim Police Department said PenCom received a 9-1-1 call from a post office customer at 10:42 a.m. Sunday, July 6, about a suspicious package sitting on top of a mail processing counter in the lobby.

Officers arrived to find a 10-inch by 12-inch cardboard box duct-taped shut with a small amount of grayish powder at the base of the package, said Chief Bill Dickinson.

After closing off public access, police officers contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation and United States Postal Inspectors to assist and the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad to assess the package.

At 2 p.m. the bomb squad arrived and evaluated the package to find no threat and classified it as a hoax.

Madison said inside the box were ashes, charred wood, an empty water bottle, a beer can and miscellaneous screws.

“From an X-ray point-of-view it would have looked like bomb components but they were able to tell it wasn’t a bomb,” he said.

The Postal Inspector’s Office and the Sequim Police Department are continuing to investigate.

So far, there are no suspects, Madison said on Tuesday, and they’re awaiting any information from the crime lab for DNA or fingerprint evidence.

“No one called in a bomb threat or made any threats we’re aware of,” he said. “We’re still treating it as if someone purposefully left it there to appear as a bomb.”
