The secret behind a good cup of coffee?

Don Batcheller of Sequim’s own Rainshadow Coffee presents “The Science Behind Coffee Making” at the Sequim Education Foundation’s Science Cafe from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The Science Cafe is held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim. Admission is free and food and beverages are available.

Batcheller has been roasting coffee professionally for five years and as a hobby for more than 20 years. His presentation covers everything from the coffee cherries — how and where they are grown — their processing and how they get to one’s cup, along with the roasting process. He discusses the myriad flavors and why they’re different from one another.

The Science Café is a community service of Sequim Education Foundation. Programs present expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

On Dec. 10, the Science Cafe hosts Mike Hagan and Dr. Roger Oakes as they present, “The Science of Restoration Ecology Alive on the Hoh River.” On Jan. 14, Dr. Vicky Blakesley hosts “From Mouse to Man: The Development of Useful Prescription Drugs.”
