Former Sequim resident Steve Gustafson is back and he’s bringing a wealth of gems to the Clallam County Gem & Mineral Association’s 2014 Rock, Gem & Jewelry Show, set for Sept. 13-14 at the Vern Burton Community Center in Port Angeles.
The free show runs 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, and features club demonstrations, award-winning showcases, raffle drawings, free rocks for children (while supplies last) and more.
On display will be rough and polished rocks, slabs, lapidary tools, beaded jewelry, faceted gem stones, facet rough, crystals, fossils, minerals, wire jewelry, wire wrapping, cabochons, painted rocks, equipment and more.
Gustafson, a Sequim High Class of 1965 graduate now living in Oregon, will be displaying his American Federation of Mineralogical Society award-winning showcases at the show. The showcases earned AFMS masters division championships for their respective classes.
One showcase displays a combination of Willow Creek and Bruneau jasper from Idaho (Willow Creek and Bruneau jaspers generally are considered to be two of the world’s finest porcelain jaspers, show organizers say). The second AFMS award-winning case consists of petrified wood cabochons from northwest U.S. locations and several international locations.
Gustafson is a retired from the pulp and paper industry and chose rock hounding and lapidary as his hobby in 2003 after attending a local rock and gem show in Portland, Ore. “I have found rock hounding and lapidary to be a rewarding hobby,” Gustafson said. “It is like a treasure hunt every time I cut open a rock to expose nature’s artwork for the first time.”
Gustafson will be at the show from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday and 3-4 p.m. Sunday to discuss the award-winning boxes and answer questions.
