Arborist Josh Dallen presents “Basic Tree Physiology for the Homeowner” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way. The talk is free and open to the public.

“This will be a primer and basic guide to correct practices when tending your own trees or considering hiring a professional,” Dallen said. “We will look at some

of the more common errors and misconceptions about trees and we’ll introduce some of the fundamental concepts of plant physiology that help us care for them the correct way.”

A few of the concepts Dallen presents include how plants grow and create new plant parts; how plant hormones regulate growth and shape and how it relates to pruning; how trees deal with wounds and decay from pruning and injury; what trees look like underground and why roots are so important and how and why trees die.

Dallen is a licensed arborist, owner of Arbor’s Edge Orchard and Tree Service and orchard manager for the Dungeness River Lamb Farm in Sequim. He has nearly a decade of experience studying and working with trees, including work with the University of Washington’s Grounds Management Department, and as crew chief for Aeldrun Landscape Installation and Design.
