Tribes canoes come ashore

Canoes approaching Jamestown Beach
Participants in the 2010 Tribal Canoe Journey (above) pull their canoes up to shore at Jamestown Beach on Thursday, July 15. Nearly 50 tribes from Western Washington and Canadian First Nations participated in the annual journey. Only four canoes landed at the beach while the rest were trucked there from Port Townsend due to inclement weather. At right, members of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe help lift a canoe to shore at Jamestown Beach. Tribal members asked permission to come ashore, which was granted by the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe in a welcoming ceremony.
