Two more Clallam County residents have died from the COVID-19 virus, it was reported Wednesday.
Both of them — a man in his 90s and a woman in her 70s — were vaccinated but not boosted and had underlying health issues that contributed to their deaths, according to Dr. Allison Berry, health officer for Clallam and Jefferson counties.
The two newest deaths bring the county’s total since the pandemic began to 101.
No new deaths from the COVID-19 virus were reported Wednesday in Jefferson County, which has lost 26 of its residents over the past two years.
Clallam County confirmed seven new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its total since the pandemic began to 10,652 cases from 10,645 reported Tuesday.
Jefferson County added 15 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its total since the pandemic began to 3,005 cases from 2,990 reported Tuesday.
Case rates continue to trend downward as the omicron variant wanes.
Clallam County’s case rate as of Wednesday was 692 per 100,000 people, down from Tuesday’s case rate of 732 per 100,000.
Jefferson County’s case rate is at 618 per 100,000 population. The case rate is updated each Friday.
Case rates are the reflection of cases reported over a two-week period. They are computed using a formula based on 100,000 population, even for counties — such as Clallam and Jefferson — that do not have 100,000 population.
Jefferson County on Wednesday reported 112 people in isolation with active cases, up from 105 on Tuesday.
Clallam County does not report that metric but does report a daily average over the past two weeks.
On its COVID-19 dashboard, Clallam County said on Wednesday that the average daily number of cases over the past two weeks is 38. On Tuesday, that number was 40. A week ago, it was 58.
Hospitalizations are trending down in Clallam County as well with six residents reported as being hospitalized with COVID-19 on Wednesday.
Two of the residents are in the intensive care unit at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, and the four others were in ICUs outside the county.
Four Jefferson County residents were reported in the hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, two in the ICU at Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend and two in hospitals outside the county.
