Locals got two chances to see Olympic team athletes last week show off their skills.

The U.S. Women’s Rugby Eagles team practiced on April 12 and 13 on the Albert Haller Playfields for enthusiastic crowds prior to competing in the HSBC Sevens World Series in Langford, British Columbia.

When players took water breaks they would mingle with the crowd and after the first practice, set up photo-ops with spectators.

At the competition, the U.S. placed seventh following a 15-10 win over Russia in extra-time on April 17. For the series, they went 2-4 with a 24-12 win over Fiji, too.

They’ll play their final circuit of the world series next month in France, which determines seeding in the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Summer Games. The women’s team already has qualified.

Women’s rugby has never competed in the Olympics and it’s the first time rugby has been in the Olympics since 1924.
