Running jogging or walking, it was a strong showing for the second Valley of the Trolls races, held at Bandy Farms’ Troll Haven in Gardiner on Aug. 20.

With three races going at the farms, 325 competitors — 100 in the half marathon, 77 in the 10-kilometer race and another 148 in the 5K — vied for top prizes and personal bests.

The turnout was up from 293 finishers in last year’s inaugural event.

Steve and Gina Slaby of Seabeck swept the half marathon, with Steve tops overall after finishing in 1:18:56 (a 6:01-per-mile pace) and Gina winning the women’s division in 1:25:24 (6:31 per mile), placing third overall. Port Townsend’s Ian Fraser was second and Sequim’s own Ash Francis took third. Emily Ellefson was Sequim’s top half-marathoner, placing 20th.

In the 10k race, Rachel Leftwich of Seattle took the title in 42:22 (6:49 per mile) while Andrew Tayne of Colbert was first among the male competitors, finishing in 43 minutes flat to take second overall. Elizabeth Rosales was the top Sequim finisher, placing fourth overall.

Katie Taylor of Port Townsend won the 5k in 20 minutes, 13 seconds, while Ryan Cupertino of Kings Park, N.Y., was the top male, finishing third with a 23:01 mark. Stacie Vandeweghe was Sequim’s top finisher, crossing the line in 25:57.

Next year’s event is to be dubbed “Trolls Gone Wild” and is set for Saturday, Aug. 19, with an 8 a.m. start.

A registration page should be up soon, says race promoter Jane Storm.
