Two squads, both clad in purple, are separating themselves from the rest of the Olympic League.
Sequim kept a game back of league leader North Kitsap with a pair of key victories last week, knocking off rival Port Angeles in straight sets on Sept. 27 and Kingston in the same fashion on Sept. 29.
Against PA’s Roughriders, Ella Christiansen had a dominating effort with 14 kills and two blocks at the Wolves dominated in three games, 25-17, 25-17 and 25-20.
Sydney Balkan had 12 assists and Lillian Oden added nine. Adrienne Haggerty had seven kills and a team-high four aces and 12 digs.
Sequim was 64-of-73 on serves with 13 aces, three coming from Tayler Breckenridge.
“Kaila (Sundquist) had not served much this season but finished PA off with three tough serves at the end of the third game,” Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman noted.
Sequim’s junior varsity (25-14, 25-21, 25-22) and C-team (25-19, 25-9, 25-19) completed the sweep.
Two days later, the Wolves out-paced Kingston’s Buccaneers on the road in three games, winning 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18.
Haggert (eight kills) and Christiansen (seven) led the way for the offense, with Oden and Balkan combining for 17 assists. Haggerty added 12 digs and Balkan had 10 to pace the defense, and the Wolves missed just three of their 74 serves (96 percent, a season-best), tallying seven aces.
“We played very well as a team,” Webber Heilman said. “Our setters spread out their sets very well … (and) our defensive play was the best we have done this season.
“Our serve-receive was also much more consistent,” Webber Heilman said, praising Breckenridge’s and Haggerty’s passing.
“We now want to work on speeding up our offense and getting more blocks at the net,” she said.
