Kitty Dissing, RN, CDE, will present a free WOW! Working on Wellness forum titled “Self-Management of Diabetes: Options & Barriers” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., in Sequim.

Dissing says that diabetes usually is considered a “self-management” disease and that the job of a diabetes educator is to empower people through knowledge and through the resources available to help them control their disease.

She will focus on the importance of educating yourself about the different options and barriers, especially given the shifts in health care and the opportunities that are available in this area.

There will be handouts for the audience with lots of information about different support groups, educational programs and typical insurance coverage.

Dissing has been a registered nurse since 2000 and she received national accreditation as a certified diabetes educator in 2008. She would like the audience to think of this forum as their opportunity to ask questions about this disease and about the options and barriers that each of them has to help self-manage their own wellness.

WOW! Working on Wellness is a health education program of the Dungeness Valley Health & Wellness Clinic, Sequim’s free clinic.

The clinic provides basic urgent care and chronic health care services to uninsured community members. Its work is supported by more than 70 volunteers, including physicians, other professional health care providers and laypersons, as well as private and public donations from the Sequim community and beyond.
