Wreaths Across America Day ceremony set in PA cemetery

Mount Angeles Memorial Park Cemetery, 45 Monroe Road, in Port Angeles, hosts the only public ceremony for Wreaths Across America Day in Clallam County at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.

The event is held in collaboration with the Michael Trebert Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter, joining more than 4,800 sites across the nation for the occasion.

In its fifth year on the Olympic Peninsula, the event features Teresa Bullock, a former U.S. Army soldier currently serving at Fort Irwin National Training Center in California. She holds the role of National Service Officer and Sergeant of Arms for the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.

The short ceremony includes the placement of eight ceremonial wreaths representing each branch of the military, along with a wreath for POW/MIA, conducted by local veterans.

The program will also showcase a Riderless Horse Salute, the playing of “Taps,” and performances by bagpipers.

The Michael Trebert DAR’s registered Wreaths Across America locations will have public live balsam wreath laying ceremonies at 10 a.m. at the Dungeness Cemetery, 1 p.m. in Gardiner Community Cemetery, and 1 p.m. in Sequim View Cemetery.

Organizers said throughout the summer, Michael Trebert DAR Chapter volunteers have been diligently working to preserve and clean more than 200 veteran markers in preparation for the event

They said that veterans are frequently honored on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, but they might be overlooked during the holiday season.

This annual event seeks to further the ongoing mission for the national event to “Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach future generations.”

As each remembrance wreath is placed by attendees, the name of the veteran is spoken aloud, conveying gratitude for their service.

Organizers said Wreaths Across America serves as a poignant reminder that a person dies twice: once at their final breath and again when their name is spoken for the last time.
