Beloved wife and mother, Cynthia Arlene Purvis, passed peacefully in her home on February 12, 2025,
with her family present. Cynthia was born on July 24, 1961 in Jackson, Tennessee, to Billy and Bythia
Perkins, one of six siblings.
Growing up in West Tennessee with her large family, Cynthia had an active youth, enjoying both sports
and academics, and was devoted to her Christian faith. The first in her family to go to college, she
worked full time while attending Lambuth University and Memphis State University, graduating in 1983 with a degree in Marketing, and a subsequent career in banking, finance and insurance in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee.
In 1992 Cynthia met and in 1995 married John, her biggest fan, thereafter becoming homemaker,
devoted wife and mother, frequent volunteer, and active participant in the Memphis Council PTA. In
2007, Cynthia and family relocated to the Sequim area and a new adventure on the North Olympic
Peninsula where she very much enjoyed exploring and attending local events. Favorite hobbies and
pastimes included crossword puzzles, Scrabble, trivia, and her somewhat loud country music, and in
later life spending time with the dog she adored.
Although generally a private person, Cynthia was always firm in her beliefs with a strong sense of right
and wrong, and had great sympathy and compassion for others, in particular for children and those she
thought less fortunate than herself. Very supportive of family and friends, Cynthia made many personal
sacrifices to take care of and ensure the well-being and success of those she loved. Her kindness, bright
intellect and keen sense of humor is sorely missed.
Cynthia was predeceased by her parents and survived by her husband John W. Purvis III and her children.
Rachel E. Closs and John W. Purvis IV, three siblings and a very large extended family. A private family gathering is planned for April in Jackson, TN. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to a local Food Bank, or to her favored charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
