Diana Butler Garland
July 22, 1922 – April 21, 2016
Our dear mother, Diana Garland, passed away in Sequim, Washington, at the age of 93.
She was the daughter of George Noel Berkeley Herrick and Margaret Gwendolen Butler (aka Margot Proctor) but grew up with her uncle, Frank Butler, and his wife Ethel in Los Angeles, California
She graduated from Marlborough School for Girls, attended fashion design school in New York (1939-41), and married her husband Robert D. “Buzz” Garland in 1942. They were married for 64 years until he passed away in 2006.
After WWII they lived in Carlsbad, California where Buzz was the publisher of the Carlsbad Journal and Diana volunteered, helped at the newspaper, and later worked as an orthodontist assistant.
They retired to Sequim in the 1980s.
Diana was an artist. She made elegant pine-needle baskets and lovely jewelry. Many will remember seeing her on Saturdays at the Sequim Open Aire Market and viewing her jewelry at the Sequim Gallery. She loved making art, growing plants, taking care of her family, and baked a wonderful apple pie. She is already sorely missed.
Diana is survived by her daughter Gay Garland Reed; her son, Nicholas S. Garland (Tammara); grandchildren Jeffrey C. Reed and Heather K. Reed; and great-grandchild Alice Geny Reed.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
