Diane Lynn Spencer
July 20, 1945-June 24, 2014
Diane Spencer, Sequim resident and business owner, passed away in her home at age 68, while in hospice care for cancer.
She was born in Seattle, to James W and Helen Petri Spencer (both deceased), the eldest of five children. The family moved and Diane graduated from Bellevue High School in 1963.
She attended Whitworth College, University of Washington, and Everett C.C. before going to work for the USPS in Seattle.
Diane then moved to Sequim to live near her parents who moved here in 1972. She worked part-time in the Sequim Post Office, then moved to Juneau, Ala. in 1975, working at Juneau area USPS stations. But missing Sequim and family, after 8 years she moved back to the Sequim area. Studying at home, she obtained her BA and Masters in Business at City University. She then went to work for Alpha One Travel in Sequim, and eventually purchased the agency, renaming it Thunderbird Travel.
She loved to travel and was proud that she had been around the world at least twice. She and her employees worked hard for their clients, going the extra mile to help people solve difficult situations or last minute needs. But the advent of the Internet combined with poor health led to her early retirement and business closure in the 1990s.
Diane never married, but was fond of dogs, cats, and other animals. She also enjoyed studying the spiritual and mystical sides of life, including comparing religions, learning about healing arts, and reading about unexplained mysteries.
Diane was a member of Eastern Star and Lamplighters in high school, joined the Sequim Prairie Grange (7th degree member), and T.O.P.S. She was a member of Sequim Presbyterian Church, switching later to Clallam Baha’i.
She is survived by her sisters Linda Spencer, Marlene Spencer, Valerie Henschel (Duane), brother William Spencer, one niece, and one grand-niece.
A celebration of Life gathering was held at the
Sequim Prairie Grange Saturday, July 12 and burial at Evergreen-Washelli in Seattle.
