Gordon Smith

Gordon Ackland Smith: June 23, 1932 – May 15, 2014

In his home surrounded and loved dearly by his family, a remarkable life force left us on May 15, 2014.

Born on June 23, 1932 in Lucky Lake Saskatchewan, Canada and spending his youth in small towns

throughout Alberta, Gordon went on to earn a mining engineering degree from the University of North Dakota in 1958.

His professional life spanned more than 50 years and took him around the world culminating as founding President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Hatch Mott Mac- Donald in 1999. Under Gordon’s leadership, Hatch Mott MacDonald evolved into an award winning international consulting firm undertaking billions of dollars in high profile projects in transportation and tunneling.

However, the real strength of Gordon Smith was his leadership, his commitment to his team, and an ethical standard that engendered trust from everyone who worked with him. There are many of us who are proud to be able to say we worked for Gordon at three companies in three

separate countries on dozens of projects and if we had our way, we would still be working for Gordon today.

Married to Debby for 30 years, they lived in San Jose, California, Toronto, Canada, and back to Pleasanton, California, for the remainder of his working life. He tried retiring several times and it finally stuck in 2010 when he and Debby moved to Sequim Washington located in the great Northwest which they loved. His health limited his adventurism over the last few years but he enjoyed his home and family and bird watching from his front window.

His kind and gentle spirit, zest for life and insatiable curiosity will be tremendously missed by those who knew and loved him and had the privilege of sharing his life. He is survived by his loving wife, three children, five grandchildren, one great grandchild, a brother and sister and more friends than this paper has room to name.

An evening of memories has been scheduled for August 7, 2014 at John Wayne Marina, Sequim Bay, Washington commencing 5:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County, 540 East 8th Street, Port Angeles, Washington 98362.
