Joyce Joan Serra
February 6, 1937-September 24, 2024
Joyce Joan Serra, age 87, died peacefully September 24th, 2024, in Edmonds, Washington, surrounded by family.
She was born February 6th, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan to Lillian and Frank Schuessler. She has a younger surviving sister Judy.
Her husband Sam joined the army at the age of nineteen and was stationed in Germany. Always courageous, at the age of seventeen, Joyce sailed alone over the Atlantic on the SS America to join him and gave birth to their first child, Phyllis. When he was honorably discharged from the army, they returned home to Detroit, Michigan before heading west to California to continue growing their family.
After many years as a homemaker Joyce began her career as a realtor. She was beloved for her honesty and dedication to her clients. In 1985 they moved to Washington State where Joyce and Sam enjoyed fishing in the Canadian inland waters. They lived on Anderson Island in the South Sound for nine years before finally settling in Sequim, WA.
Joyce prioritized God, her family and her country. Although her mother was not known for her cooking, Joyce became a wonderful cook and taught her daughter Christine and her granddaughter, Jinan, the joy of cooking. Joyce and Sam enjoyed having friends over often to enjoy the bounty from their fishing trips, halibut and chips, or for a roast chicken and nice salad.
She was a very social person creating lifelong friends and building new friendships throughout her life. She was also very active on social media expressing her views on X, staying close to her grandchildren on Instagram and keeping in touch with her community of friends on Facebook.
There were always dog family members in Joyce’s life. She had a special fondness for Siberian Huskies, their friskiness and their joie de vivre. During her lifetime there were 3 different husky’s named Tasha which we fondly refer to as Tasha 1, Tasha 2 and Tasha 3. Joyce’s last Husky, Tasha 3, was an 8-year-old rescue that suffered severe skin allergies and Joyce could not turn her back. Theirs was a very special bond.
Joyce Serra was beloved by her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She is survived by her three children, Phyllis, Christine, and Michael, and her four grandchildren.
