Guest Opinion: How the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula transform lives

In small, rural communities affordable out-of-school time options for youth can be scarce. For 40 years, the Boys & Girls Clubs have been a lifeline, offering children a brighter future.

With a mission to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens,” our clubs in Sequim and Port Angeles are open more than 300 days a year, providing safe spaces where youth thrive. From preschool to high school graduation, we offer programs promoting academic success, health and well-being, character development, and career readiness.

For many kids, especially teenagers, after-school hours can be a time that leads to social isolation and risky behavior. Clubs fill this gap by offering a structured, supervised environment where youth can stay engaged, make friends, and grow personally. Whether it’s completing homework, exploring creative activities or sharing a meal, caring adult mentors provide invaluable support.

The Clubs’ impact goes beyond just providing a safe place. Many local families face financial struggles, and for just $30 a year, with scholarships available for those who need them, kids gain access to nutritious meals, academic support, and more. Our daily meals and free school supplies help children stay healthy and ready to learn. The Clubs also offer programs that develop leadership skills, and self-confidence, ensuring youth are prepared for adulthood.

The Boys & Girls Clubs serve a diverse group, including vulnerable youth such as those in foster care or experiencing homelessness. These kids receive free membership, allowing them to participate fully without financial burden. The clubs offer a support system, including trauma-informed care, that helps them thrive.

Our clubhouses provide dedicated teen centers with specialized programs like workforce readiness, career exploration, living skills, community service, and internships. To ensure there are no barriers, teens attend for free. These programs help adolescents build confidence, gain life skills, and prepare for life beyond high school.

We cannot fulfill our mission alone. Community partnerships are crucial to our Boys & Girls Club as they provide essential resources, support, and expertise that enhance programs and services. By collaborating with local businesses, schools, and service organizations, we expand our reach, ensuring more kids have access to positive opportunities. These partnerships also foster a sense of shared responsibility, creating a stronger community that works together to uplift the next generation. With continued community commitment, the clubs will remain a vital resource, helping young people succeed for years to come.
