In this race, there are no first- or second-place medalists, only winners and more winners.

The annual Greywolf Jog-A-Thon is miles of exercise for students but a big-time fundraiser for the Greywolf Parent-Teacher Association, helping fund school projects and aiding teachers with classroom expenses.

Each year, Greywolf students get donations from family and the community for a set fee or per Jog-A-Thon lap. On Oct. 11, they race around the Greywolf activity field, hoping to raise funds and perhaps a perk or two: the top money-earner for each grade gets a limo ride to lunch at The Cedars at Dungeness with principal Patty Grenquist, while the top-earning class gets a swimming party at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center.

Last year, the event raised more than $13,000. With that and other PTA fundraisers, the Greywolf PTA raised about $64,000 in 2007-2008. With those funds, PTA members gave $200 to each teacher to help offset funds they pay out of pocket during the year and helped fund a WeatherBug System, linking school weather reports to Seattle’s KING 5. Greywolf PTA member Darcy Lamb said the school hopes to have the WeatherBug system running by middle of October.

The goal, Lamb said, is to raise about $10,000 at this year’s Jog-A-Thon.

An awards assembly follows the event, where the top students from each grade receive their awards, including spirit wear, hats, megaphones and other prizes.
