Agnew resident cheers on granddaughter in Olympic Games

When Tatiana Weston-Webb took to the waves in Tahiti to vie for Olympic Games glory, she had fans across the world rooting for her — including an Agnew resident.

More than 4,800 miles away, Dawn Weston-Webb joined in the fun from afar as she watched her granddaughter earn a silver medal in women’s shortboard surfing in the 2024 Games — technically held in Paris, France, but with surfing competitions held in Tahiti, French Polynesia.

Tatiana, 28, a veteran of the World Championship Tour since 2015, competed in the 2020 Olympic Games (Tokyo) and in the 2024 Games for Brazil, getting edged out in the Aug. 5 final by 0.18 of a point by American Caroline Marks.

Tatiana’s father Douglas, an American but was born in England, is a longtime surfer, and her mother Tanira was a Brazilian professional body boarder. Tatiana, who calls Hawaii home, had three options for who she could compete for — the U.S., Brazil or England.

“She’s more American but her mom’s side side is Brazilian and Portuguese,” Dawn said.

“I think that [competing for Team USA] was a real consideration but her mom’s got a big family over there [so] she decided to go that route.”

Dawn said when Tatiana was very young she was severely cross-eyed and wore thick glasses. At age 8, watching her older brother Troy inspired her to surf.

“He put her on a big board right away; because she couldn’t see [very well], she didn’t develop that fear,” Dawn said.

Tatiana later got corrective eye surgeries.

In her mid-teens, Tatiana got to portray a young Bethany Hamilton for the box office hit “Soul Surfer.”

“Bethany is a neighbor in Hawaii … and it (making the movie) was quite an experience,” Dawns said.

Dawn said she watched just a few of Tatiana’s competitions as the youngster grew into a world class competitor.

“We’d go see her whenever we were there [in Hawaii],” Dawn noted. “She’s surfed all over the world. We didn’t travel far — mainly Hawaiian islands.”

In 2020, Tatiana married longtime boyfriend Jessé Mendes dos Santos, a fellow Brazilian professional surfer. Dawn said they’ve visited the Olympic Peninsula, where they enjoyed some time inner tubing on Lake Crescent.

“She was sliding all over the place; they loved that,” Dawn said.
