The postseason honors for this team just continue to roll in. Instead of trophies and certificates, these kudos came in the form of gift cards and cupcakes.
Melinda Lehman Dewey and the Sequim Schools Alumni Association met with members of the 2022-23 Sequim High girls basketball team on June 7 to congratulate them on an outstanding season — one that saw the team go undefeated in league play, a second place at districts and a fourth place finish at the state 2A tournament, the best finish for the Wolves in program history.
“I have a couple of friends with daughters on the team, so I organized a fundraiser” to honor the team, Dewey said.
“They were very sweet,” she said of current team members.
Dewey handed out treats from That Takes the Cake and Rainshadow Café gift cards, and “told them what it was like playing basketball in my day.”
Dewey, who graduated in 1982, said that she was 5-foot-11 (and-a-half) in her prep playing days — she’s 6-2 now — and one of the tallest in the state.
“Now they’re girls playing against girls who are 6-4, 6-6,” Dewey said. “Girls basketball is a very competitive sport. They seem to play a little rougher than the guys do.”
Dewey played a bit in college and coached some hoops at the middle school level. She said she appreciated the standard things that come with playing on a team: camaraderie, discipline and teamwork
“I played all sports,” she said. “I was 5-11 when I was 11 years old, so I didn’t have a choice. [But] I loved to play.”
Dewey said she volunteered to help out with the taller SHS players in the future.
“I’m excited for them,” she said. “It’s something you remember for the rest of your life.”
