Avalanche takes Tip-Off tourney

The Olympic Avalanche, a select basketball squad of girls from the North Olympic Peninsula, won the championship for fifth-grade girls division at the Port Angeles Youth Tip-Off Tourney last weekend.

The team now has two titles and a third-place finish in three tournaments this season.

 

In game one, the Avalanche overwhelmed Port Angeles 60-9, getting 14 points from Courtney Swan. Emilia Long had 10 points and eight steals while Ruth Moss added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

 

In game two, the Avalanche clobbered the South Kitsap Storm 44-20, with 11 points from Moss and eight each from Hannah Reetz, Jaida Wood and Sequim’s own Kalli Wiker.

 

In game three, the Avalanche again dispatched Port Angeles 63-4. Long, Wood and Camille Stensgard had 10 points apiece.

 

In the championship game, the Avalanche knocked off the the South Kitsap Storm once again, 43-21. Wood had nine points, 10 rebounds and four steals to lead the team.

 

“Jaida Wood was exceptional for us all weekend but she saved her best game for the championship,” coach Joe Marvelle said.

 

“The girls played very well this weekend. They played in total synch as a team. Everyone contributed to this championship.”
