Jay Barton, the lone Sequim High athlete to advance to the West Central District Swimming/Diving Tournament in Renton Feb. 8-9, finished ninth overall and qualified for the state 2A/3A meet next weekend in Federal Way as a wild card.
Barton, a senior, scored 274.85 points to finish in the top 10. Though only the top six athletes advance to the state tourney, Barton’s score was good enough for a wild card berth.
In 2007, Barton qualified for the district meet but, unlike this season, didn’t qualify for the finals.
“I think Jay performed well, and I am proud of his achievements,” diving coach Susan Craig said.
Freshman Troy Neklason of Highline won the district title with 378.80 points.
