Fife pitcher Tanner Knapp wasn’t about to let a chance at a state tournament berth go by.

Knapp tallied 15 strikeouts in seven innings as Fife shut out Sequim 5-0 in a 2A West Central District matchup on May 14, sending the Trojans to an automatic state 2A tournament berth and sending Sequim (12-8) to the consolation bracket.

The Wolves will have to win twice on Saturday, May 17, to advance to the state tournament with the district’s fifth and final state berth.

Sequim takes on more Trojans — these from league rival Olympic — at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Silverdale. The winner of that game takes on the winner of the other consolation game (Klahowya vs. Franklin Pierce) at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Against Fife, Sequim had little answer for Knapp, who struck out the side in the first and fourth innings and two batters in four other innings. Sequim’s Evan Hurn had two of Sequim’s four hits, including a sixth inning leadoff double, but the Fife pitcher kept the shutout intact by making the Wolves miss. Sequim loaded the bases in the first and second innings, but Knapp ended both threats with strikeouts.

Sequim’s Nick Johnston suffered the loss on the mound, giving up five runs — four earned — on six hits. He struck out seven and walked none.

Fife’s Jaden Hassell had a home run. Dusty Bates and Dylan Lott had hits for Sequim.
