Sequim’s baseball squad rebounded from a pair of losses to rival Port Angeles with two big non-league wins to close out the week.
On April 14, the Wolves (1-7 in league play, 5-7 overall) scored nine runs in the first inning as Ethan Staples had a monster game in an 11-6 win at Crosspoint (Bremerton).
Staples hit a home run and pitched five innings for the victory, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven. Hunter Tennell and Bryant Laboy closed the game, with Laboy coming in to strike out the final batter.
Ayden Holland went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Brayden White went 1-for-3 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Zeke Schmadeke had a hit, two runs scored and an RBI, while Lincoln Bear had a hit, two runs scored and two RBIs.
A day later, Sequim’s bats stayed hot and produced an 11-run second inning and a six-run sixth to beat East Jefferson, 22-12.
Though the Wolves collected 17 hits, both teams struggled in the field: they combined for 16 errors and just nine of the 34 runs scored were earned.
White, Holland and Staples each had big days for Sequim. White went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, an RBI and a walk. Holland was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and a run scored. Staples hit a double, walked twice, scored two runs and drove in four.
Ricky Jennings, Hunter Tennell and Bryant Laboy all had two hits and two RBIs for the Wolves. Tennell and Laboy each scored two runs. Lincoln Bear was 2-for-5 and scored four runs.
On the mound, the Wolves’ pitchers tallied 11 strikeouts. Adrian Aragon went two innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Devyn Dearinger pitched an inning, striking out three, while Jennings went three innings, struck out three and allowed four earned runs.
Wolves fall to PA
Strong outings by Port Angeles pitchers helped the Roughriders sweep a home-and-away series with their Sequim rivals last week.
On April 11 in Port Angeles, Port Angeles starter Kole Acker held Sequim batters to four hits and no runs while Riders Elijah Floodstrom and Ezra Townsend had two hits and three RBIs each in a 10-0, five-inning Roughrider win at Civic Field.
Dearinger had two hits while Schmadeke had a double and Staples added a hit for Sequim.
Bear tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Sequim.
“We’re a young team and learning to compete at this level. They outplayed us,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “We have to work harder to hit when we have runners in scoring position.”
Two days later in Sequim, the Wolves couldn’t keep Port Angeles’ Colton Romero off the basepaths as the Roughriders put together another solid day at the plate, pounding out 11 hits and taking advantage of five Sequim errors in a 12-2 win in five innings.
Sequim (1-7 in Olympic League, 3-7 overall) was also scheduled to host Bremerton on April 18; results were not available at press time.
Looking ahead
Sequim is at Bremerton on April 20. The Wolves finish with home-and-away series against North Mason (at home April 24, away April 26) and Olympic (at home April 28, away May 1).
