Baseball: Robideau tosses gem in Wolves’ win

Sequim’s Wolves split a pair of Olympic League games last week, highlighted by a seniors’ sterling effort on the mound.

Toppy Robideau had the hot (pitching) hand as he dominated Knights batters in a 4-1 home win over Bremerton on April 18.

Robideau threw a four-hit complete game, striking out eight and giving up just one walk.

Sequim opened the scoring in the third on an RBI single by Lincoln Bear that plated Bryant Laboy.

Bremerton tied it up in the top of the fifth on a fielder’s choice, but Sequim got back on top quickly. In the bottom of the inning. Bear knocked in Laboy once again, this time by an RBI triple. Ayden Holland followed with an RBI single to drive in Bear.

Two days later, Sequim (2-8 in Olympic League, 6-8 overall) jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold it in a 6-4 loss at Bremerton.

The Wolves scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ethan Staples hit a sacrifice fly for a run, Devyn Dearinger scored another on a fielder’s choice, and an error brought another run home.

Staples pitched four solid innings before starting the fifth inning with two walks. Zeke Schmadeke was able to work out of the jam giving up just one run to preserve a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth.

Bremerton’s bats came alive that inning, however, for four runs to jump out to a 6-3 lead.

Dearinger knocked in another run with an RBI double to keep the Wolves in the game but Sequim couldn’t complete the comeback.

Braydan White took the loss.

Sequim’s offensive highlights included Schmadeke going 2-for-3 with a run scored, White going 2-for-4 with a run, and Dearinger going 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

The Wolves are scheduled to finish the regular season with home-and-away series against North Mason (at home April 24, away April 26) and Olympic (at home April 28, away May 1).
