Baseball: Wolves hit bump before spring break SLIDESHOW

When it rains, it pours.

A trio of tough opponents — two of them Olympic League rivals — sent Sequim into a three-game losing streak last week heading into their final games before spring break.

“We kind of had a tough week, but the season’s still young,” Sequim coach Dave Ditlefsen said.

After losses to North Kitsap and Olympic earlier in the week, Sequim got a stellar effort from starter Austin Hilliard, who threw seven strong innings against a tough Anacortes squad on April 2. But Seahawk starter Lincoln Gilden stymied the Wolves with a two-hitter, striking out eight in a complete game effort to give the visitors a 2-0 win.

“Everything was working; it was all going,” Hilliard said. “Everything he (SHS catcher Ian Dennis) was putting down, I wasn’t shaking him off. The defense was as solid as its been all week.”

Anacortes got just enough offense, hitting sacrifice flies in the fifth and seventh innings.

A pair of misplayed flyballs in the fourth inning nearly broke the scoreless tie, but an Anacortes misstep on the base paths and the SHS defense worked out of a jam.

“We’re still trying to find the right combination out there,” Ditlefsen said of the Sequim outfield. “Today’s a much better sign. The infield was rock solid. We need to get the bats going again.”

Evan Hurn (sixth inning) and Logan Hankison (seventh) had the lone hits for Sequim, both singles.

Hilliard finished with five strikeouts and just one walk.

Sequim was slated to host rivals Port Angeles on April 4 and Kingston on April 5 — results were too late for this section.

The Wolves are back in action following spring break, hosting North Mason on April 12.

Sequim plays at Port Townsend on April 14 and hosts Vashon on April 15 in a non-league matchup.

Rocking Rochester

Sequim’s week started strong, thanks to hurler Nick Faunce’s first win of the season.

A two-run first inning by the host 1A Rochester squad didn’t faze Sequim’s Wolves, who came back to knock off their hosts 7-3 in a non-Olympic League win on March 28, in the town just south of Olympia.

Daniel Harker and Gavin Velarde drove in two runs apiece while Faunce got his first victory, giving up two earned runs and striking out six Warriors over five innings. Ian Miller tossed two shutout innings to complete the win striking out four.

The Wolves overcame five errors and Brandon Rogers’ 13 strikeouts.

Vikings the victors

A forgettable, error-filled fourth inning led to Sequim’s first Olympic League loss, a 9-1 home defeat to North Kitsap.

The visiting Vikings jumped ahead in the second inning after a leadoff error and two-out RBI single by third baseman Nate Marcelino put NK up 1-0. Sequim responded in the bottom of the inning when Nigel Christian led off with a single and scored on an error.

But North Kitsap opened the floodgates in the fourth when the first two batters reached by error. A walk, another RBI single by Marcelino, two sacrifice flies, a two-RBI double and three more errors later, North Kitsap had plated seven runs to lead 8-1. The Vikings added another run in the sixth, and RBI double by Nash Gowin to score Leif Klinger.

Viking ace Kole Milyard didn’t need much more, striking out seven Wolves and walking three over six innings.

Christian took the hard-luck loss, giving up four hits and eight unearned runs over three-and-two-thirds innings. James Thayer and Miller worked the rest of the game, combining to give up just three hits and a run and striking out three.

Trojans top Wolves

Sequim starter Gavin Velarde spread six hits over five innings, but a quintet of errors led to six unearned runs in a 7-4 Sequim loss at Olympic on March 31.

Velarde went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored Sequim’s first run, but Olympic took advantage of Sequim miscues for one run in the first and second innings, and Trojan catcher Kylen Pereira ripped a two-run double in the third inning that proved to be the game winner.

Down 7-1 in the seventh, Sequim mounted a comeback that saw Thayer plate Justin Porter with an RBI single, Velarde drive in a run and Ian Dennis hit a sacrifice fly.

Junior Levi Rowen threw six innings of on-run (unearned), six-strikeout baseball. The Wolves managed two hits off the starter, though they did draw six walks in all.
