A full-court press helped Team Gators snag victory in double overtime in the championship game to win the Sequim Youth Basketball League girls’ third-/fourth-grade division title recently.
The Gators, coached by Wes Bond and Kris Henrikson, fell behind 18-12 after three quarters but outscored the Tsunamis 6-0 to force extra time.
The first time was scoreless and in the sudden death second overtime period, Gator Maddy Mote scored the winning basket for the 20-18 victory.
“The Tsunamis are a skilled team with some great players and coaches,” Henrikson said. “The (Gator) girls responded with defensive pressure that allowed us to create turnovers and utilize our quickness against their height.”
Henrikson praised organizers and supporters of Sequim Youth Basketball.
“Ben Webb and Art Green do a fantastic job to offer youth basketball to our youth of our community,” Henrikson said. “This helps build the program up for future success down the road in middle school and high school.”
Gator team members are Lillian Bond, Mariah Duran, Kinzley Henrikson, Ella Mote, Madeline Mote, Hailey Wagner and Rilynn Whitehead.
