Big fun at annual Big Dill tourney

More than three dozen pickleball players took to the “big stage” at this past weekend’s Big Dill pickleball tournament, hosted by the Sequim Picklers on July 27.

The annual event brings predominantly beginning players rated 2.0-2.9 to come together for what is often their first experience in a tournament.

Lettie Flerchinger, director of Court Operations and a tourney organizer for the Picklers group, said many pickleball tournaments, even at the lower rated levels, tend to be pretty competitive, while the Big Dill — in its fifth iteration on July 27 — helps newcomers ease into competition.

“They get exposure to tournament,” Flerchinger said. “It feels like a big block party.

This year’s event saw 40 competitors, 30 women and 10 men.

Kim Kummer and Donna Salas took top honors, edging second place finishers Mary Collister and Harold Balderson 15-11 in the championship match.

Patty Benson and Kyle Cooper topped Kristin Deverin and Isabelle Makiewicz 15-7 in the third/fourth place match.
