Missing one of their top playmakers, Sequim’s Wolves were no match for the visiting, Olympic League-leading Kingston Buccaneers.
Liam Young led a trio of Bucs in double figures with 19 points while Buc Gabe Gregory added 13 points and 10 rebounds as Kingston routed the host Wolves 67-28 on Dec. 16.
“That is a tough game to pull positives out of,” Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. “That’s a very good team. They are a well-oiled machine. What I’m impressed with the most is how well they share the ball.”
Payton Glasser led Sequim with 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the field. Sequim’s other scorers were Kyler Rollness (three points), Jon Cole (two) and Keeshawn Whitney (one).
Glasser led the team with six rebounds; Whitney and Riley Cowan had five each. Rollness added three steals and two assists.
The Wolves were without starting points guard Nate Despain, who missed the contest to be at a family wedding, Greg Glasser said.
“I think we missed Nate a lot today,” Greg Glasser said. “We depend on him a lot.”
Kingston shot 25-of-54 from the floor (46 percent) while the Wolves were just 10-of-46 (22 percent). The Bucs out-rebounded Sequim, 32-23.
“We knew they were going to be one of the top two teams in the league (along with North Kitsap),” Greg Glasser said.
Vikings victorious with second-half spurt
Sequim kept pace with their hosts in Poulsbo before a third quarter run helped give North Kitsap a 67-45 win on Dec. 13.
Kohlten Barringer-Mahitka scored 14 points while Cooper Lindsey and Kai Warren added 12 points each to lead North Kitsap, which held a five-point halftime lead before out-scoring Sequim 13-7 in the third quarter and 23-12 in the fourth.
Payton Glasser led Sequim with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting. He and Whitney had seven rebounds each.
Despain added 11 points, a pair of blocks and two steals.
North Kitsap held Sequim to 37 percent shooting from the field.
Looking ahead
Sequim was scheduled to host Centralia on Dec. 20 — results were not available at press time.
The Wolves play a pair of non-conference games at the Holiday Hoops on the Hill Tournament in Seattle Dec. 28-29. Sequim plays Archbishop Murphy on Dec. 28 and either Tenino or host The Northwest School, an independent prep boarding school, on Dec. 29.
