Wolves in second place behind Knights

In their first meeting of the season, Olympic was missing one of their key pieces. In Sequim’s second meeting with Olympic, the Wolves were missing one of their top starters.

In both cases, Sequim came out on top.

The Wolves overcame a 10-point deficit in the final quarter to force overtime, where Alex Barry scored four of his game-high 18 points and Sequim eked out a 57-55 victory in Silverdale on Friday night.

Olympic, which dropped a 57-50 game in Sequim on Dec. 11 minus starter Kyle Setten, looked to control the game after Sequim’s Erik Christensen fouled out at the 5:17 mark; Trojan Shane Matheny’s free throws gave Olympic at 47-37 lead.

But Sequim, minus starting forward Rory Kallappa (injury), chipped away at the lead, getting a burst of points from Barry, Anthony Pinza and Alex Rutherford in the final five minutes. Barry’s jumper at the 55-second mark brought Sequim within two and Pinza’s layup with six seconds remaining sent the game into overtime tied at 51-51.

With less than a minute left, Barry sank two free throws to put Sequim up 57-53. Makaleb McInnis brought Olympic within two points with a field goal and was fouled. McInnis intentionally missed his free throw try and Olympic’s Matheny grabbed the ensuing rebound, but his last-second shot was off the mark.

Pinza finished with 13 points while Josh McConnaughey had seven rebounds and a season-high 10 points. Barry had 16 rebounds, seven on the offensive glass.

McInnis and Setten had 11 points each to lead Olympic.

Earlier in the week, Sequim fended off a tough Port Townsend squad on the Redskins’ home court, 51-40.

Barry had 14 points and Pinza added 13 as the Wolves avoided the upset.

Jacob King scored 14 points for Port Townsend.

Sequim held a 14-8 lead after one quarter, a 24-17 lead by halftime and 34-25 lead after three quarters, but the Redskins trimmed that lead to just four halfway through the fourth quarter.

Barry, however, sank a pair of 3-pointers late to help seal the win. His second trey with 2:36 to go put the Wolves up 44-36.
