A smaller Sequim squad didn’t have the numbers in a match-up with Bremerton last week, falling 2-0 to the Knights in a March 30 home contest.
The lineup was predominantly filled with junior varsity players, noted assistant coach Dave Breckenridge.
“[Bremerton’s] game was figured out immediately by the boys; they just booted it forward with hopes that their strikers could connect. Fortunately, most the time we were able to defend well,” he said.
“The unfortunate part was the two penalty calls that ended as goals.”
The Wolves were down to 10 players at one point because of fatigue and pulled muscles, Breckenridge said.
“We had opportunities to put it in the net and just couldn’t make it happen. [I’m] very proud of the team for coming together with so many pieces missing and connecting multiple passes to advance up the field.”
Breckenridge said swing player John Pehrson had a standout varsity debut for the Wolves.
“Not only did he hold it down in defense, but made multiple runs and through ball passes to create chances for our strikers,” Breckenridge said.
Earlier in the week, Sequim fell 5-0 at 3A Bainbridge.
The Wolves (1-5) will look to heal injuries and get back to full strength after spring break.
