Boys swimming: Ellefson improves on school-best 500 free mark at state

A week after breaking the school record in the 500 freestyle, Sequim High’s Colby Ellefson was at it again.

Ellefson splashed his way into the B finals in two events at the 2A state meet in Federal Way this past weekend, taking 12th place in the 500 free and 15th place in the 200 free, with both finals races on Feb. 19.

A sophomore who practiced and competed alongside Port Angeles High swimmers during the regular season, Ellefson improved his 500 free time by nine seconds at the West Central District meet with a finish of 5:24.73, besting the SHS standard set by Kaleb Needoba three years ago.

At the state meet’s preliminary 500 free on Feb. 18, Ellefson slashed another seven-and-a-half seconds off his previous best with a 5:17.16 mark and was seeded 10th heading into the B finals on Feb. 19; there he finished with a 5:19.14 mark, placing 12th.

In the 200 free preliminaries, Ellefson was 16th overall after a mark of 1:56.76 — a personal best and about 1.5 seconds better than his district time set one week prior. In the 200 free B final Feb. 19, he improved by one place with a time of 1:56.95.

With his efforts, Sequim scored seven points and placed 30th as a team.

Port Angeles’ boys, Ellefson’s teammates during the regular season, placed eighth at the 2A state meet.
