A number of sick swimmers didn’t keep the Wolves from finishing the regular season with several personal best times and a district meet qualifier from freshman Jax Thaxton in a 106-50 loss to North Kitsap on Jan. 26.

Thaxton trimmed nearly a full second off his 100 freestyle time to 58.25, to earn a spot at districts.

Sam Frymer improved his 200 free time by 12 seconds (2:52.80) and nine seconds off his best 100 backstroke (1:30.74).

“His starts and turns are looking much better and his endurance has improved,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said of Frymer.

Steve Nguyen also improved his 100 free time by about one second (1:22.39).

Sequim’s 200 medley relay team of Frymer, Nguyen, Mike Larsen and James Thayer trimmed two seconds off their previous best and the Wolves’ 400 free relay team (Thaxton, Alex Berikoff, Christian Goodrich and Liam Payne) dropped nearly six seconds off their best time, less than 13 seconds off a district meet-qualifying mark.

The Wolves honored their four graduating seniors, one a four-year varsity swimmer (Goodrich) and three of whom — Larsen, Nguyen and Thayer — took up swimming for the first time this winter to get some conditioning for baseball season or were recuperating from football injuries, Moats said.

“When asked what surprised them about swimming, the common answer was ‘I learned to not breathe water,’” Moats said. “They also said they learned that failure sometimes happens but not to give up. Very inspiring! Our one veteran senior said he was surprised how swimming increased his muscle mass.”

Sequim finished the season at 0-6, in large part because of their small overall team turnout.

“Our team’s low participant numbers hurts us when it comes to scoring,” Moats said.

“About two thirds of the team showed initial symptoms of a cold today, so given the health state of the team, I think they swam very well,” Moats said. “We would have liked to have seen more best times, but hopefully a weekend of rest will result in faster swims on Tuesday.”

Sequim was scheduled to swim at the Divisional Invitational — known as the “Last Chance Meet” — on Jan. 31 in Port Angeles, where athletes have one more try at district meet-qualifying times. Results from the invitational were not available at press time.

Qualifying Wolves compete at the 2A-3A district meet Feb. 10-11 at Hazen High School in Renton.
