When Sequim coach Linda Moats looks for strong performances from her Wolves this year, she’ll be looking at a lot of new faces.

Just four athletes return from last year’s squad that sent two relay teams and two divers to state.

Back is junior Eric Prosser, who competed in both relays and the 100 backstroke at the state 2A finals.

Also back are junior Markus Petersen, sophomore Logan Hankinson and this year’s team captain, sophomore Wendall Lorenzen.

Sequim’s squad features 14 newcomers — nine swimmers and five divers. Moats said those that show the most promise early on include Hayes Clawson, Zak Robinson and Scott Shaefer.

“The others will be good swimmers in time and with practice,” she said.

With two top-15 state divers graduated (Austin Clement and Cameron Harrison), the Wolves look to promising newcomers Joe Cameron, Grant Witherell and Patrick McCrorie.

Moats said she expects newcomers Daniel Newell and Tyler Ebert to make an impact for the Wolves.

Top teams in the Olympic League, Moats said, are Port Angeles, Klahowya and North Kitsap.

“Because we are such a young team (experience-wise) we just want to teach basic competitive form and build endurance this year,” Moats said.

“Because of that we really don’t envision any of the dual meets as being key meets for our team. Certain athletes may utilize the competition to achieve championship qualifying standards, but as a team on the whole, we will have a relatively mellow season.”

Sequim opens the season at Klahowya (Silverdale) on Dec. 5 before hosting the Bremerton Knights on Dec. 12. Home meets are at the Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center.
