One Wolf found a way to put a stamp on a fine prep career, the other a freshman who stepped onto the big stage.
Sequim High School senior swimmer Eric Prosser and SHS diver freshman Mathew Craig finished their respective seasons at the state 2A meet, held Feb. 20-21 in Federal Way.
Prosser set a personal best in the 100 backstroke with a 1:00.76 in the preliminaries on Friday and kept his No. 14 spot with a 1:01.08 finish in the finals on Saturday.
Prosser also competed in the 200 individual medley Friday, finishing out of the running for the finals with a 2:14.64 mark, good for 22nd place overall.
This marked Prosser’s third state appearance in as many seasons.
“This is the first year he has been able to swim in the state finals,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said. “He was very happy and we are all very proud of him.”
Craig, one of just three freshmen competing in the 2A ranks, tallied 197.45 points in Friday’s preliminaries to qualify for Saturday’s finals, where three strong dives in the end helped him move up to 15th place.
“For his first year of diving, he has performed very well and we look forward to state trips each of the next three years with him,” Moats said.
Sequim finished 33rd at the state meet. Port Angeles finished eighth as a team on the strength of John Macias’ two second-place finishes (100 backstroke, 100 freestyle).
Anacortes won the boys’ 2A team title with 226 points to edge Sehome by a point, in a competition that came down to the meet’s final event (400 freestyle relay).
