Injuries may have derailed Sequim quarterback Frank Catelli’s season, but that didn’t stop coaches from naming the senior Olympic League co-MVP.
Catelli joins league defensive MVP Tyler Forshaw and nine other Wolves named to the All-Olympic League football teams last week.
Catelli finished with 1,567 yards passing, 13 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He also ran for 273 yards and five touchdowns. He shared league MVP honors with Port Angeles quarterback Keenan Walker.
Forshaw led the Wolves with nine interceptions and added 76 tackles, 29 solo hits. Forshaw also was named to the all-league first team at wide receiver (48 catches for 750 yards and three scores) and as a kick returner.
Other Wolves named to the all-league first team include running back Jack Wiker (803 rushing yards for 17 touchdowns), offensive lineman Brendan Carpenter (helped team rack up nearly 3,700 yards) and defensive back Nick Ramirez (six interceptions, 86 tackles).
Wolves named to the all-league second team include wide receiver Christian Miles (23 catches for 389 yards and four scores), offensive lineman Jake Hudson, defensive lineman Andrew Shimer (three sacks, 88 tackles) and linebacker Michael Ballard (84 tackles).
Sequim players earning honorable mention status include Ballard, tight end; Hudson, defensive line; Miles, defensive back; Ramirez, wide receiver; Wiker, linebacker; Clay Charlie, defensive line; and Al Serrano, offensive line.
Port Angeles players named to the All-Olympic League team include Brian Christion (OL, first team), Nick Ioffrida (DL, first team), Eli Fiscalini (LB, first team and RB, honorable mention), Skyler Gray (DB, first team and kick returner, second team), Dylan Brewer (RB, second team and LB, honorable mention) and Cameron Braithwaite (WR, second team and DB, honorable mention), along with honorable mentions William Gorden (DL), Tyler Rixon (OL) and Eric Wahl (OL).
Port Angeles won the league sportsmanship award.
Kingston quarterback Sam Byers was the offensive MVP. North Kitsap’s coaching staff won the league’s coaching award for taking a 1-9 team in 2010 into a playoff team in 2011.
Balkan, Harrison shine for Sequim
Sequim juniors Taylor Balkan and Haleigh Harrison got the Wolves within one set of the class 2A state volleyball tourney.
All-Olympic League first team honors will have to suffice.
The pair was named to the all-league list last week.
Balkan, a setter, led the Wolves with 341 assists, 46 aces and a 93.8 serving percentage.
Harrison, a middle blocker, led Sequim with 159 kills and 47 blocks, and added 16 aces and 109 digs.
Sequim libero Hannah Hudson and outside hitter Kyla Martin were named all-league honorable mentions.
Hudson, a sophomore, led Sequim with 176 digs while Martin, a senior, was second in the team in assists (17), digs (116) and third on the squad in kills (46), blocks (10) and aces (17).
Sequim and Klahowya shared the team sportsmanship award for 2011.
Sequim rival Port Angeles saw a number of players named to the all-league list, including league MVP Kiah Jones.
P.A. libero Laurel Norton was named league defensive player of the year and was named to the league’s second team while Roughrider setter Emily Drake was named to the all-league first team. Earning honorable mention honors were Port Angeles’ Darian Foley and Autumn Ruddick.
Christine Halberg of Port Angeles took the league’s Coach of the Year award.
Sequim soccer squad shows sportsmanship
The Wolves’ girls soccer squad may have struggled on the field, but Olympic league coaches appreciated how they handled themselves.
Sequim took home the league sportsmanship award, finishing eighth in the league with a 1-7 record (2-12 overall).
The Wolves did not have a player on the all-league first team; sophomore defenseman Sarah Hutchison was named to the all-league second team.
Senior Kristen Phifer and freshmen Maeve Harris (midfielder) and Shelby Lott (goalkeeper) were named honorable mentions.
Port Angeles players named to the all-league team included senior defenseman Paxton Rodocker (first team), senior midfielder Kathryn Moseley (second team), and honorable mentions Kaitlin Boston, Kearsten Cox and Brittany McBride.
Katlyn Sargent of Klahowya, Delanne Nilles of North Kitsap, both seniors, were named Olympic League co-MVPs.
North Kitsap, Klahowya and Bremerton each placed three players on the first team, second team and as honorable mentions.
