Not a bad way to kick-start the league schedule.

Adrian Clifford and Jasmine McMullin led their packs of Wolves to first-place finishes as they knocked off Bremerton and Klahowya at NAD Park in Bremerton on Sept. 18.

McMullin topped the girls’ field with an 18:04 finish — nearly a minute better than runner-up Klahowya sophomore Hannah Welzbacker — while teammates Emily Webb (third), Amelia Ohnstad (19:22) and Emma Barrell (sixth) helped Sequim top Klahowya in team scoring by nine points (24 to 33, low score wins).

On the boys’ side, Clifford took second overall and led a group of five Sequim runners in the top seven as they breezed past Klahowya and Bremerton in team scoring. Teammates were Mikey Cobb (third), Peter Ohnstad (fourth), Dylan Chatters (fifth) and C.J. Daniels (seventh).

Clifford finished the 2.4-mile course in 13:55, with Cobb 13 seconds behind.

Klahowya senior Mike Ward took top honors in the boys’ race with a 13:37 finish.

Sequim continues its league schedule on Sept. 26, when the Wolves travel to Kingston to take on the Buccaneers and North Kitsap.

Sequim hosts Olympic and Port Townsend on Oct. 3.

Shining in Seaside

While runners at the Sept. 22 Three-Course Challenge in Seaside, Ore., were busy getting dirty in the race’s heralded "mud pit," Sequim’s cross country squads were busy cleaning up.

Sequim’s boys took first place while the Wolves’ girls took fourth among Division III (medium-sized) schools, getting strong finishes from upperclassmen and newcomers alike.

(The race is divided into three courses — easy, moderate and hard — and featured high school and middle school teams from across the West.)

Clifford placed fourth in his division on the hard course, crossing the line 22nd out of 513 runners overall. Cobb, the SHS sophomore, was third in his division and 18th out of 555 runners on the moderate course.

Daniels, the freshman, was third and sophomore Alex Barry was fifth among Division III runners on the easy course, placing 31st and 61st overall, respectively, on the 460-runner course.

On the girls’ side, McMullin led Sequim with a fifth-place finish in her division and was 51st overall among 297 runners on the hard course. Joining McMullin on the hard course were Ohnstad (16th) and Sydney Hastings (24th).

Webb was 18th on moderate course among Division III runners while Emma Eekhoff was 14th in her division on the easy course.
