In an echo of the Olympic League opener, Sequim’s girl cross country squad took third place behind Bainbridge and Port Angeles, while SHS’s boys placed seventh in a seven-team field at a league meet held Sept. 25 in Belfair.
Bainbridge took six of the nine spots to tally 20 team points to outpace Port Angeles (64), Sequim (95) and North Kitsap (109) in the girls’ race. Olympic (41) topped Bainbridge (48) for the top spot in the boys’ varsity competition, with Kingston (66) in third.
SHS senior Dawn Hulstedt was the top Wolf finisher, taking sixth in the girls’ 5,000-meter race in 21:14.76, a personal best. Teammate Marea Denton, a freshman, was 18th in 23:20.30, and SHS sophomore Bridget “Birdie” Pyeatt set a personal record and placed 23rd, in 24:01.57. Junior Manuela Valle Jover was 29th (24:40.95) and senior Aspen Goldner was 37th (25:24.81), in a 73-runner field.
On the boys’ side, Soph Adrian Osborne raced to a 19th place finish in 18:21.63, a personal best over 5,000 meters, and freshman teammate Westley French was 33rd in 19:00.64.
SHS freshman Ryker Rossi was the top boys junior varsity finisher, placing 47th in 21:59.50.
Looking ahead
The Wolves host their lone league meet of the season on Oct. 2, held at the Voice of America course at the Dungeness Recreation Area.
Sequim runners are at the 28th John Payne XC Invitational at Chambers Creek Properties in University Place on Oct. 5, and return to league action on Oct. 9 in Port Angeles.
