Stevens won individual titles, but it was the host Sequim squad that swept the team scores.

Sequim’s middle school cross country boys and girls teams topped Port Angeles’ Stevens Middle School and Blue Heron of Port Townsend on Oct. 7 at Robin Hill County Park.

On the girls’ side, Stevens runners Emilia Long and Ella Holland went first and second but Sequim put six runners in the top 10 to edge out their rivals. Sequim scored 27 team points to Stevens’ 30 (low score wins).

Jessica Dietzman finished the 2,400-meter course in 9:19 for third place while teammate Abby Schroeder was fourth in 9:23.

Sequim’s Elenor Bryne was sixth with a 9:40 finish and Timberwolves Vita Olson (10:17), Mary McAleer (10:43) and Emma Sharp (10:51) went eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively.

It’s the first time Sequim has topped Stevens this season, dropping the first meet by 25 points and a Sept. 30 meet by 11 points.

On the boys’ side, Stevens star Thomas Shaw edged out Sequim’s Reid Parker by 0.65 of a second for the top individual spot, but Sequim’s boys took five of the top nine spots for 25 team points, out-pacing Stevens (37) and Blue Heron (68).

Sequim’s Parker (8:26), Ryan Tolberd (8:32) and Mike McAleer (8:36) finished 2-3-4, while teammate Adrian Funston was close behind in seventh place at 8:51 and Zen Graham (8:53) taking ninth.

The three schools are back on the course Oct. 14 at Port Angles’ Lincoln Park and Oct. 22 at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course in Sequim, before finishing the season at the North Olympic League cross country championships, set for Oct. 27 in Port Angeles.
