For 28 years, locals and the occasional visitor have made the Saundra Kent Memorial Tennis Tournament a proverbial staple of their summer plans.

This year, however, tournament officials said there were not enough entries to form a full draw, so they canceled the two-weekend event.

The tournament, planned as in recent years to be played at Port Angeles’ Erickson Courts, traditionally hosted brackets for men’s and women’s singles, men’s, women’s and mixed doubles and 50+ age divisions. Competition is organized based on United States Tennis Association player ratings and includes categories from 3.0-5.0.

Organizers say that, despite this year’s cancelation, they plan for a Saundra Kent tourney in 2015.

The annual tournament is named after Saundra Kent, a Port Angeles High School graduate who was one of the first recipients of a scholarship sponsored by the Peninsula Tennis Club.

According to tennis club members, Kent was popular in the community and active in tennis, but after a year in college, she was diagnosed with leukemia and died the same year.

The annual tourney helps pay for scholarships awarded by the club to Sequim and Port Angeles High School seniors.
